I watched the video The Hidden Influence of Social Networks by Nicholas Christakis; who prior to this video, was a hospice doctor who took care of people who were dying. He had been observing what happened to people and their families over the course of their terminal illnesses. In addition to observing these people he was also studying the widower effect. The widower effect is "a very old idea in social science that goes back a hundred and fifty years, known as dying of a broken heart." For example, "when I die my wife's risk of dying can double for instance in the first year."
In the Ted Talk he shows how and why we are all connected to each other. And he shows it through the spread of obesity. Furthermore, he calls it "similarity and clustering." There are three causes of this. The first one is induction, for example, "I gain weight it causes you to gain weight." Induction is a kind of spread from person to person. The second one is homophily, or birds of a feather flocked together, for example " I form my tie to you cause you and I are similar body size." And lastly the third is confounding, for example " Not that my weight gain is causing your weight gain, nor that I form a tie with you because we share the same body size. But rather that we share a common exposure to something like a health club that makes us both lose weight at the same time."
After this they used a variety of techniques to explore all kinds of other phenomenons like smoking and drinking behaviors, and voting behaviors and divorce which can all spread. Eventually they came across emotions. But the connection came with for example, if someone smiles at you, you are likely to smile back. Also if your best friend is in a bad mood, more than likely if you hang out with that person for a while you will start to be put into a bad mood. So the two of you are connected. And it can work through a chain also. Like I'm connected to you and you're connected to him, this makes the three of us connected.
I learned in this video about how we are connected to one another. Which was really cool to find out how things like that happen, especially with a chain reaction. As much as it was fascinating, I don't really want to use it towards finding out what matters to me. It's a cool concept but I'm not interested in dealing with how we are connected to each other or go into the science field. The closest to that I would become would be being a therapist. And only because I like to help people and solve problems.
I recommend this video to anyone who is interested in finding out how we are connected. It was a very good video to watch especially if that is what you are interested in. I hope you can take what you learned from the video and use it towards finding out connections between people in their ordinary lives.
